Welcome to Go Book Yourself, the Hungry Reader summer book club! This blog post is the OFFICIAL rules; these rules may be reposted, but this will always be the most current version. Updates will be listed at the top.
How It Works
If you ever participated in the Pizza Hut “Book It!” reading program, you’ll be familiar with how Go Book Yourself works. The big difference is that I’ll be double-checking everything you turn in for prizes– I’m just one dude, I can’t afford to eat the cost of a personal pizza for all the kids who only pretended to read all those books!
- Post the Go Book Yourself! logo, shown above, to your personal space on the Internet, whether it’s social media or your own website. On social media you can also reblog the Hungry Reader’s posting of the same picture.
- Simply share links to The Hungry Reader, whether to his videos or to jarringcontrast.com, on your favorite social media, message boards, and content aggregation sites. THR recommends you check his Twitter, Facebook, and Tumblr, as retweeting, reblogging, and sharing his own video announcements all count toward your total! (Also, why not follow him on those sites while you’re there?)
- When you post a link to the Hungry Reader, save a permalink to the tweet/status/Tumbl(?)/message board post, and keep a list of all of them– just like the list of Book It! books you read that you kept as a kid. Remember to save the permalink: it’s found in a different place for each one.
Facebook: A status’s permalink is found by clicking the date under the name of the poster.
Twitter: Clicking on the “…” symbol under a Tweet brings up a menu. Click on “Copy Link To Tweet” to get the permalink.
Tumblr: Click the top right corner of any post to go to its permalink: you’ll know you’re doing it right when the corner of the post “dog-ears” and folds over. - When you feel you’ve saved up enough links to get the reward you were hoping for, paste your list of links into an email to hungryreader@gmail.com. That’s the only place you can send them, posting the list on social media doesn’t count! Don’t worry about sending details about your picture/commercial/book, I’ll solicit them when I send you your confirmation email.
- Send your list of links to me (hungryreader@gmail.com) by September 7, 2015. That’s Labor Day– traditionally the last day before school starts. (Unless you live in my district, where the kids have already been back in school for two weeks… what the hell, California!) It’s totally okay to send it before then, too!
What You Can Win
- 1+ links: All participants, the tall and the small, will be acknowledged out of gratitude in all Hungry Reader videos produced in September.
- 10+ links: The Hungry Reader will draw one 720×1280 picture at your request, black and white (or monochrome), the rights to which belong exclusively to the reward recipient.
- 25+ links: The Hungry Reader will include the winner’s image, or an image chosen by the winner to represent them, in a future Hungry Reader episode. If no particular character is chosen to be represented by the winner, the appearance will be a walk-on.
- 30+ links: The Hungry Reader will draw one 720×1280 picture at your request, in full color, the rights to which belong exclusively to the reward recipient.
- 50+ links: The Hungry Reader will film a 15-second commercial, to air during his show, for whatever business or interest the reward recipient desires– outside of interests counter to the Hungry Reader’s interests, that is.
- 100+ links: The Hungry Reader will film a 5+ minute episode of his show in which he explores a book of the reward recipient’s choice. This includes children’s books, adult books, ebooks, fanfiction, comic books, magazines, and any form of the printed word.
Some Reasonable Questions To Ask
“I Just Discovered You– Can I Participate Too?”
You sure can! That was the whole spirit of this exercise, to get people involved! If you’re not interested in my show and just want a free picture or something, that’s okay– you’ve brought me more views even if they’re not from you!
“When Will I Get My Reward?”
Rewards will be awarded in the order that the rewardees’ lists arrive in my mailbox! So if I got Jimmy X’s 50-link entry at 8 PM and your 50-link entry comes at 8:05, then sorry, but Jimmy gets the first email asking for details about his commercial.
“What If My Links Don’t Work?”
You should really recheck all your links before you send them. If they’re really gone, you can always try and repost them if it’s not Labor Day yet, maybe this time they’ll stick! But if you’ve really got your heart set on a particular reward, you should probably give yourself a buffer for links that disappear: if you’re going for the 50-link reward, it might be better to shoot for 60 to be on the safe side. But be warned, I’ll have a lot of work to do and a lot of rewards to pay back, so I’m not likely to be very generous about missing links.
“What If You Get Swamped?”
Honestly, if I got more entries than I could provide rewards for, I’d probably jump for joy! But I’ll keep everyone posted, here and on other media, of what my workload is like. If worse comes to worse, I may have to send out emails informing you of the day in the future your reward is projected to come.
